Breaking the chain

I am the first woman in a family of lawyers and judges who chose to break the chain and become an artist. Where my family heard a verdict, I heard a voice; where they saw a courtroom, I saw a stage. To choose the theater over the law, in a family like mine, was its own kind of trial.

Naples and Turin

I grew up between two cities. Naples taught me that a story is something you perform with your whole body — loud, superstitious, alive. Turin taught me discipline, the cold north light of the page, the patience to set a thing down and revise it. Between the two I found the work of my life: the place where language becomes theater, and theater becomes a way of seeing.

I think often of an Antigone we staged at sunset in Chieri, the light failing exactly as the tragedy closed, the audience and the actors held in the same dimming hour. That was when I understood what I wanted to make: not productions, but encounters — work that refuses to let you stay a spectator.

New York, and Blonde

In New York I followed the question further, into a dual doctoral path with Columbia, where the real education happened less in the seminar than in the slow labor of turning one woman’s life into something an audience could inhabit.

Then came the gift that defined my voice: Joyce Carol Oates granted me the rights to adapt her novel Blonde for the stage. Turning seven hundred pages of Marilyn Monroe into three acts taught me everything I know about writing — and taught me that adaptation is not translation but authorship, the deliberate choice of whose eyes we see through.
